With this update, you will see a lot of improvements on the social side of Kodingen, not much changed on code editing.

I am also happy to announce that we are coming out of beta very very soon. We are building an awesome interface with feedback we gathered out of 100s of emails you sent us. New Kodingen will be truly awesome! That’s the only thing I can tell you but, if you had seen it, i’m sure you’d agree.

So please enjoy the improved forums, groups, reply to comments that will sent as an email to the comment owner, complete your profile, enjoy your @username and fasten your seat belts for the major release of Kodingen 1.0!

I wanted to share with you my thoughts on web dev environments and sum up my opinions.

I can categorize feedbacks in two, most (99%) say they love it and think this is the way to go, and some (1%) think that this is way behind their desktop environments.

And I agree with both. I think the important point is that we should never forget how we have started out. We have all been there, just remind yourself how difficult it was to setup a development environment on your local machine, or remember your face when you first saw Eclipse.

When I check for example coderun, I remember the days that I was trying to get Visual Studio running on my PC. I remember, getting a running VS with correct .NET libraries costed me at least days and nights when it was first out. Now if I go to their website, I can run a .NET code in around 10 seconds. If this was there in the past, I might have become a good .Net developer instead of giving up on it.

I remember when I was looking for a good code editor, a good hosting company. I remember turning on my first Linux, trying to setup MySQL, Apache with correct modules. All these are now past, right now, it doesn’t cost me more than 3 minutes to setup everything I need after 10 years of experience. But I decided to share my experience and create something very useful for those who doesn’t want to deal with stuff that they don’t have to deal with.  I’d much prefer them to go through those years tackling brand new challenges and create great products.

I also see tremendous value in what we are doing, by we I do not only mean Kodingen, I see there is codeslam, phpanywhere, bespin, pixlr, aviary and lots of others that are trying to help you do what you want to do.

Surely, the time will come and web will become the one and only thing you need to do most of your tasks that you can’t even imagine today. I think very soon, web editors will be no less than Eclipse or VS. We are surely committed to get there, and we will get there. And when we do, things that we can achieve will be far beyond code editing.

And I hope to see you there, in the future.

Today we have made an important update to Kodingen, the main change you’ll see is the application selector window. This window will appear when you try to open a code file and will show you available editors on Kodingen.

As you may notice, Kodingen doesn’t even know your hostname. Your FTP drives stay on the system only 3 hours after you mount them, once it’s unmounted, system doesn’t know anything about it either.

Your FTP drives are mounted only under your username so that system processes can’t index them. Remounting is only possible when you login thus only by you. These keys you see on our database are decrypted with your password that is also not stored on our databases.

We are very excited! Here I am to let you know: we are ready for the second round.

We are excited because after initial release while we had to keep you waiting for so long, we worked so hard, so intense but not everything worked as they should.

We wrote a lot of code, we have re-written the backend from scratch, and not only once, a few times. Sinan rewrote the front end each time we changed the backend too. I have to tell you, sometimes I found it hard to sleep, worrying if we could ever relaunch.

That’s why, tonight will be a great night for me, and I wish that you will like what you see on this beta.

What have we done ?

• Kodingen is now pure shell scripting to our shared server or to your own dedicated server, getting closer to ideal cloud computing environment. (If you haven’t seen it yet, please click Ctrl-B now or the orange handle at the bottom center)
• All tasks are queued and executed in a way that never crashes the server (Thanks to Ozgur and Jiakuan)
• Soon we will open source this backend Java client so that you can execute your own tasks on your own servers.
• We are almost there to release Kodingen Open Source front end so that you can customize Kodingen UI and make it available to other Kodingen users (paid or free), we will tell you about this a little later.

What is on our agenda ?

• Svn, Git, Mercurial integration
• Amazon S3, SSHFS, CloudFS, UbuntuOne or any other file storage systems integration so that you feel free about your files
• Open sourcing Kodingen backend and frontend, we need to work on a version that is easily understandable and workable by you which also entails proper documentation (please feel free to offer help)
• Java / Tomcat deployment, compiling and execution using cloud servers.
• Working with audio and video files
• Enabling creation of server templates so that Kodingen Users can fire up not only blank linux boxes but what is made available by you.
• Server templates will make server farms and can be offered as a paid service to other Kodingen Users.
• Adding more domains and creating teams, realtime collaborating on the projects
• Creating  project history with actual written code of developers which will create immediate trust before adding someone to your team
• Project management tools with payment options that you can hire developers or find projects.
• Adding domains and more resources to your accounts.

What are our weak points ?

• We don’t know how many users we can handle with what amount of resources, therefore this beta is only for 1000 users.
• We don’t know how much money we will need to keep Kodingen live.
• Kodingen is not a dedicated office full of people, please keep in mind that we are doing our best trying to respond to your emails while developing.
• We make daily backups so if file loss happens, you will lose files between then and previous 12am EST.
• Thus, please note that we do not guarantee anything during our beta testing.
• Keeping FTP connections alive is very resource consuming so we keep them alive until the 1st minute of the next hour, you can remount it easily before you use it.
• Your download links will stay valid until the 1st minute of the next hour.
• Your website installations will create files under wrong file permissions, wait till the next minute, all permissions will be fine.
• Since we have integrated many legacy systems, very rarely, your account may not be set up properly, please contact us, we will fix it for you.

Kodingen is now open for beta testers after long days and nights of development. We would like to share with you what we have done so far and get your feedback.

In this beta release, you can create files, folders, connect to your ftp drives, use mysql databases and code.

Our aim in developing Kodingen is to remove all barriers that stand between you and those cool web applications you want to develop. As you know, even to get your simple “Hello World” running, you need to download and install a lot of programs,  deal with PHP, Apache installations, buy a code editor, set up an FTP server and go through lots of other mind-numbing tasks.

No more. We are very excited to give you Kodingen, a tool where you can connect your FTP’s, create databases, have your SVN and bugtracking tools -the minute you create your account. Very soon you will also be able to collaborate with your team instantly without exchanging any passwords.
